Beef Treats They Like

Jake loves treats, and these are at the top of his list.

As if the furkids didn’t have enough treats, I found some more good ones.

Natural Gourmet Beef Recipe Rolls are in a 10-ounce bag with a sticker proclaiming “Made in the U.S.A.” on its front. I found these at Trader Joe’s, where I do not ordinarily shop, for $4.99.

The rolls should be broken in half for small dogs, but a furkid 40 pounds or more could eat a whole one.

Jake recognizes the bag, and I have to hide it. Otherwise he will sit on the floor beneath the kitchen counter and nag me for one.

If he could talk, I’m sure he would tell me to shop at Trader Joe’s regularly.

Another Puppy Mill Girl Surprise

Hope guards the front door while the evil vacuum cleaner roams the house.

Hope, our miniature schnauzer who was in an Amish puppy mill for five years, decided she wanted a walk and didn’t care if no one else wanted one.

Hope started her “I want a walk” bark. Jake and Windy joined in. With about 2 to 3 inches of snow, I was skeptical about walking everyone. After I put their coats on, and they do like their coats, with leashes in my hand out the door we went.

Somehow Windy’s leash slipped through my hand. She headed across the yard into the cul-de-sac. I called to her to come back. She stopped in the unplowed street, looked at me and ran back.

“Great, Windy comes when called now,” I thought. She ran past me, up the steps to the front door and began scratching frantically. Jake thought this was a good idea too and joined her. Hope stood beside me. I got the wieners’ leashes and tried to get them off the porch. They dug their feet into the snow and started to slide.

Sometimes you have to obey your dogs. Back into the house we went. Hope, however, stayed inside by the door while Jake and Windy ran into the living room.

After removing Jake and Windy’s coats and leashes, I saw Hope still by the door. Sometimes you have to obey your dog, so off for a walk we went.

Hope was excited and galloped a bit. She did not mind being alone with me. This is a breakthrough. We had a nice walk, but she was ready to go in when we returned to the house.

So, remember: Sometimes you have to obey your dog.

Wiener Dogs Are Wonderful

The markings over Windy’s eyes are called “points”. She also has tan markings on her paws and tail.

Even though Windy and Jake are the same breed, their personalities are different.

Jake is more outgoing, Windy sedate. Jake can demand with a strong bark what he wants: treats, walks or attention. Windy, however, makes eyes at you while placing her paw on your leg or arm.

Generally dachshunds are of good temperament, playful, smart and courageous. Even though my puppy mill girl, Hope, a schnauzer, has her problems, Jake and Windy accept her as she is and have taught her a great deal.

Tummy Rubs Mean More Than Comfort

Jake loves tummy rubs.

Ah, what a life Jake has – no job, no mortgage and no worries. We take care of all that, and he can relax.

When a dog shows you his tummy that tells you he accepts your authority. Also in Jake’s case it means he feels safe enough in his environment to sleep on his back.  This goes back to a dog’s wolf ancestors. The tummy was one of a wolf’s vulnerable spots. To show their acceptance to the alpha wolf’s authority, other wolves would show submission by getting on their backs. If one or more wolves in a pack were not submissive, fights would ensue.

Windy has a cute tummy and likes for us to rub it. Hope, on the other hand, never gets on her back, but yet she does not try to be an alpha. Letting us pet her on the head seems to work for her.

Dogs’ New Year’s Resolutions

From left: Jake, the alpha; Hope, puppy mill survivor; and Windy, young diva.

As I look toward 2011, here is what I think my furkids would resolve:

Jake — take more naps.

Hope — work on trust issues.

Windy – plot to become the alpha dog.

As for me, I plan to get more involved with defeating puppy mills and dog auctions.

From Jake, Hope, Windy and their furparents: HAVE A HAPPY AND SAFE NEW YEAR!

Dog Auction Ban Fails; Puppy Mills Continue

Hope, who was mistreated in an Amish puppy mill for five years, is learning to play with toys in her forever home.

Ohio probably will remain for at least another year as one of the most notorious puppy mills states in the nation.

The Coalition to Ban Dog Auctions did not get enough signatures to place the ban in the hands of the state legislature.

What do dog auctions have to do with puppy mills? The dogs at these auctions are products from puppy mills. Dogs can be injured or sick. They are treated like livestock, not companion animals.

Professional breeders who care about dog health and standards do not participate in auctions. The American Kennel Club states, “The American Kennel Club considers auctions and raffles not to be reasonable and appropriate methods to obtain or transfer dogs.” (akc.org)

New Treats They Love

Jake was not paid to endorse this product, but he would like to be.

Jake, Windy and Hope received some treats they really like.

Grandma Lucy’s Organic Oven Baked Dog Treats look like little teddy bears and smell delicious. Yes, delicious. The blueberry ones smell like Pop Tarts.

The bags are 14 ounces, and I also have the ginger ones. I have not shopped for them, so I cannot mention a price.

The bag announces the treats are “Made with 100% human-quality ingredients for dogs.” Where I get the furkids groomed, some of the employees were eating them as snacks. (And I don’t mean the four-legged employees.)

I have not tried one. I don’t want to deprive my pack.  At this rate, I suspect Jake will hide the box of Milk Bones.

Christmas Gifts Galore

Windy enjoys destroying her hedgehog Christmas morning.

The furkids made out like bandits this Christmas.

Friends from Florida sent them a giant Pez container with dog treats.

Friends from Tennessee sent them toys and bandanas.

Hope’s foster mom sent homemade dog biscuits. (They look good enough to eat to me.)

Another friend brought toys and treats.

We bought toys, cow ears and tennis balls for them.

Before next Christmas, I’m going to start barking.
